18: Give in...

The hodge-podge of plastic placemats
decorated our dinner table like a patchwork quilt
Remainded plates, cups, forks, and pizza crust stubs
were scattered like haphazard jewelry
I sat, in my chair, watching
the littles run around the kitchen yelling
my husband begin to clean up our meal
After a while
it all
became
white noise
my thoughts
became
sluggish
my eyelids
became
droopy
and I knew
despite all propriety
that the only
course of action
for me
at that minute
was to
push the placemat
to the side and
cross my arms
on top of the
table and rest
my head and
close my
eyes
and
give
in

Write on,
b

  2. I guess San Diego wore you out? Why can't I think of gems like this, "pizza crust stubs
    were scattered like haphazard jewelry"
What a way with words, catch up on your sleep.

    1. My slices are a little out of order, Elsie, because I was in San Diego mid-February and wrote some of the related pieces around that time. But, honestly, I traveled to three conferences in one month...and I'm still recovering with projects, chores, and sleep! Thanks for your kind words. :)

  3. This poem was awesome! I like how it felt as though it slowed down with the pace of the story. Your line breaks were brilliant! I hope you get a wonderful night of sleep! :)
